The Ibom Golf and Country Club (IGCC) continues to play a pivotal role in positioning Akwa Ibom as a premier tourism and sporting destination in Nigeria. This commitment was on full display during the recently concluded Captain’s Inaugural Tournament, a landmark event that brought together over 250 golf enthusiasts from across the country.
The tournament, which took place from March 27 to March 29, celebrated the leadership of the Club’s new Captain, Mr. Isuamfon Archibong. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Mr. Archibong emphasized the club’s dedication to aligning with the state government’s vision for tourism and economic growth.
With Akwa Ibom State’s increasing focus on tourism development, Ibom Golf Club stands as a significant driver in attracting visitors and boosting local businesses. The tournament saw an influx of golfers and their guests, contributing to the hospitality sector, transportation services, and small businesses across the state.
“Akwa Ibom has immense potential as a golf tourism hub,” Mr. Archibong noted. “With a world-class golf course, serene environment, and outstanding hospitality, we have the right ingredients to make the state the preferred golfing destination in Nigeria. Through tournaments like this, we not only promote the sport but also generate economic opportunities for residents.”
The event kicked off with the Par 3 Championship at the newly built ARISE Park Golf Course on March 27, followed by the official tournament rounds at the Ibom Golf Course on March 28 and 29. The competition was segmented into different handicap categories, ensuring broad participation from seasoned professionals to amateur golfers.
Beyond the game, attendees enjoyed a vibrant social experience, including a cocktail party and a gala night, where winners were recognized and celebrated. The event served as both a networking platform and an opportunity to appreciate the fusion of sports and leisure that Ibom Golf Club embodies.
Looking ahead, the Ibom Golf and Country Club is keen on growing its membership and ensuring optimal utilization of its top-tier facilities. “Our goal is to see the course active every day, with golfers, tourists, and corporate organizations taking advantage of this premium sporting environment,” Mr. Archibong stated.
He also lauded the state government, particularly Governor Umo Eno, for investing in the maintenance and enhancement of the golf course, ensuring that it remains a standard-bearer in the country.
One of the tournament’s key sponsors, Ibom Air, underscored the strategic role of golf in driving tourism and air travel to the state. Chief Operating Officer, Mr. George Uriesi, highlighted the airline’s enthusiasm in supporting events that create demand for travel to Akwa Ibom.
“Ibom Golf Club is fostering a dynamic sporting culture that aligns with our mission at Ibom Air—bringing people to Akwa Ibom,” he said. “This tournament has showcased the state’s potential as a major golf and tourism hub.”
